Advantages of having a barbeque hut

  • 30 Sep 2023

Having a BBQ shed brings a wide range of benefits. For example, they offer the opportunity to create a space which is dedicated to socialising and eating. An outdoor BBQ hut can be designed and built to be welcoming and cosy, with enough space for family gatherings and parties with friends.

BBQ cabins can be designed and constructed to exact specifications, so you can customise these spaces to suit your needs. The size, capacity and decor are all elements which can be personalised, so whether you want a large open space or a more intimate, enclosed building, these needs can be met.

Dedicated BBQ cabins can also be built with enough distance from the main residence to avoid smoke and cooking smells from entering. This means that a variety of meals can be cooked and eaten with the peace of mind that the odours are not causing a problem for neighbours too.

A covered barbeque lodge is the perfect place to socialise no matter the weather. Rain, wind or snow will be no challenge for your gathering, given that the space will remain warm even in the coldest times of year. However, having an open BBQ hut also has advantages, such as offering plenty of ventilation and fresh air, and can help visitors connect to the outside world.

At Logspan, we have a range of tailored BBQ huts for sale. Give our experts a call today to discuss the best choice for your needs.

Keeping bespoke log cabins heated

  • 21 Sep 2023

Although log cabins are generally environmentally friendly and can retain warmth with sufficient insulation and good positioning, there are other tricks to be implemented which can help maintain a well-heated yet comfortable structure.

The addition of yellow tones to the garden cabin room will give the impression of warmth, while the light emitted by this sort of shade is a way to enhance the natural light of the space. Well-padded furniture such as sofas and armchairs create a comfortable and warm environment, which can be further enhanced by a selection of plump cushions and cosy blankets. Some may choose luxury upholstery fabric to enhance the cabin’s overall appearance, although more budget-friendly options in your chosen colour scheme are just as snug.

Adding thick rugs to the floor will not only reduce drafts rising through the floorboards, but provide a warm, dry surface to walk on. Other DIY draft excluders fitted beneath doors or around windows can drastically reduce the amount of cold air that can find its way into outdoor huts and gazebos. Thick, plush curtains, for example, can be aesthetically pleasing while retaining insulation.

Room dividers, bookcases and wall hangings are other nifty ways to block the chill while keeping the cabin looking stylish. You may also find it useful to dedicate an area of your log cabin to set up an area equipped with tea and coffee making facilities.

Personalising your log cabin

  • 12 Sep 2023

Once your garden cabin room or barbeque lodge has been completed, there are many ways to enhance and improve it. For example, it is possible to add an additional storey to log cabins to create bedrooms or workspaces. A staircase must be added to access this new space before any work is carried out to achieve this, and the foundations must be checked to ensure they can carry the additional weight.

Adding a loft is another way of enhancing a school cabin or garden office cabin. Fewer changes to the cabin's structure is required for this addition, but it is still advisable to ensure any load-bearing walls and posts can tolerate the extra weight. This extra space can be used for storage, or as an additional living space.

Improvements to the exterior roof can often be made if the original log cabins had a felt material cover. Shingles may be added to make the structure more waterproof, and to enhance the overall appearance of the cabin.

Solar panels not only enhance the environmental credentials of log cabins, but they will also save you money. Adding insulation panels will also add to the preservation of heat and save on future costs. Decorative ironmongering such as door handles, letterboxes and hinges will provide a unique and customised appearance to your outdoor huts and gazebos. These items can also contribute to the security and safety of your log cabin.

Interior design options for your Log Cabins

  • 3 Sep 2023

One of the benefits of owning your own log cabin is that you can create and decorate your home-away-from-home in its own unique style.

Often, the interiors of bespoke log cabins are influenced by where they are located. Many want to give their outdoor huts and gazebos a rustic feel to reflect their rural locations, which could involve adding lots of fabrics, as well as having plenty of exposed wood and brickwork. There are, however, many alternatives for those wanting to choose a different style for their cabin, or for those who want the location of their log cabins to be mirrored in their aesthetic.

If your BBQ huts are set in urban areas, for instance, you may wish to give them a more modern appearance. You could achieve this by adding details such as lighting fixtures and a more open plan living area. Leaving fittings raw and unfinished could also create a sort of industrialised interior.

Bohemian interiors are appropriate for any hot tub garden rooms or log cabins. Simply adding lots of cushions, throws and rugs to add a pop of colour is just one affordable way to achieve this look. These interiors are perfect for any sort of garden cabin room, but would suit a log cabin in any location or setting.

For seaside log cabins, a maritime theme with anchors and jars of sea glass, amongst other oceanic decorations, could be used.

Architectural features of log cabins

  • 23 Aug 2023

There are many different styles of log cabins which can be adopted during the design and build process. In this blog,

For example, the full scribe technique is a popular option for many. This process involves layering the planks of wood horizontally generally without a frame. Shrinkage and tightening of the wood over time creates a strong, resilient building.

Another architectural method for constructing a garden cabin room or barbeque lodge is chinking. This is similar to the full scribe, but this way of building involves adding a mortar, or chink, in between each plank of wood. Watertight and weatherproof, outdoor huts and gazebos are then created.

Vertically placed logs are used for post and beam log cabins. This approach generally uses fewer wooden planks, so it is cost effective and more eco-friendly than other buildings. In a similar way, the timber framed bespoke log cabins are made. The planks of wood used for these cabins are made squarer, and the overall process is usually a lot quicker and easier than other building procedures.

Corner post log cabins are designed to have posts at each end of the cabin to finish it off neatly and to offer a natural place for the wood to end.

One of the easiest ways of building log cabins is the hybrid approach. This involves using partial wood materials and partially using veneers with the appearance of timber. Log cabins can be built quickly and easily this way.

What to consider before building a log cabin

  • 12 Aug 2023

Building a log cabin can be a life-changing experience, but there are several things to consider before the work starts. For example, choosing a good spot for the structure is imperative. Usually, it needs to be a place which is convenient to get to, and one which is not too exposed to the elements.

Planning permission is also an issue which has to be examined, so working with your local planning team is a must. Permission is not always necessary, but this largely depends on the size, construction and nature of the cabin.

Selecting good quality materials is important, as these will impact on the longevity and ease of maintenance of your cabin. To avoid costly mistakes, the wood, fixtures and fittings should be chosen at the early stages of planning your cabin. The higher calibre the components, the more likely they will fit together well and last a lifetime. A garden office cabin, for example, will also be able to withstand adverse weather conditions without any leaks or damage.

The design of log cabins, especially your first one, should be simple. By keeping to this design aesthetic, the cost will be kept to a minimum and no unnecessary materials will be needed, reducing the environmental impact of the building. Efficiency is also increased when recycled wood and other materials can be factored into the design.

Talk to us at Logspan today and we can discuss the issues you must consider before you start building your log cabins.

Things to consider before buying log cabins

  • 6 Aug 2023

Buying log cabins can be exciting but it is important to consider several points before purchasing one. For example, some of the first considerations should be the location of your garden cabin room and the style of cabin you want. There are many options available, including single or double storey, traditional or modern, and there are also many choices for different types of materials.

Ideally, if possible, a south-facing cabin is ideal since this offers more sunlight and warmth; if this is not possible, the best orientation available must be used. It is usually best to avoid shaded areas or those which are likely to get damp or flooded. Deciding on walls, flooring and roof fittings must be done as soon as possible.

Other vital points to consider are how your bbq shed or garden office cabin will be attached to services such as gas, electricity and drainage. Septic tanks may need to be looked at and separate water or power meters may also need to be installed. Solar panels can help reduce bills and improve the environmental impact of your bespoke log cabins.

Upkeep and maintenance must also be an important consideration, and you need to plan if you intend to do this yourself or use local trades people. Generally, investing in a better-quality cabin will reduce the upkeep costs considerably.

Do I need planning permission for a log cabin in my garden?

  • 3 Aug 2023

Often, log cabins built in your garden will need planning permission, but this will depend upon several things. If you are planning on living in your cabin or you intend to rent it out as a holiday home, then yes, you will need to apply for planning permission from your local authority. Holiday homes are classified as commercial entities, this is the reason why they are subject to this process.

You may also need to apply for planning permission if you want to use your log cabin as a school cabin or office. To decide if you need to apply or not, you must ascertain if the structure will have a bathroom or somewhere to wash clothes. If it will, then yes, planning permission might be required as this type of cabin could be classed as a potential residential home.

There are other issues to think about and many of these will determine whether permission is needed. For example, if your cabin will be taller than 2.5 meters and it is located less than 2 meters of any boundary, then it is likely that planning permission must be sought. Permission will also be needed if you plan on building more than 1 storey.

It is usually best to check with your own local authority as there may be some differences between geographical areas and what is deemed to need planning permission or not. It may also be worthwhile contacting your planning office to see if your planned outdoor huts and gazebos fall under permitted development rules, which can mean you can avoid the planning application process.

There are situations when you will not need planning permission for log cabins. These could include attaching it to your existing home; often, in these circumstances, the cabin will be classed as an extension and will not fall under planning rules.

You may also avoid the planning office if the cabin is built at the back of your current property and does not take up more than half of the available space in your garden for example. If you intend to use it as a garden cabin room only and not to spend too much time there, again, you may not need planning permission, but it is always advisable to check this first.

To discuss planning permission and whether your intended cabin will fall into these categories, call our team today at Logspan.

Are log cabins environmentally friendly?

  • 30 Jul 2023

Compared to traditional pieces of construction, log cabins are often considered to be healthier for the natural environment. But is this really the case?

The short answer is yes, log cabins can, and generally are, very environmentally friendly. There are many ways to ensure that this is the case and one of the easiest is to use local timber merchants and other tradespeople. This reduces the need for long-distance travel and ultimately the carbon footprint of any outdoor huts and gazebos.

Another simple way to improve the environmental credentials of log cabins is to use sustainable wood and other building materials. These can be recycled goods, wood that is grown and cut down in an appropriate way and using paints and stains which are low in those ingredients which have an impact on the ozone layer.

To reduce the consumption of power, inserting large windows for natural light into bbq huts, hot tub garden rooms or simple log cabins will negate the need to use artificial lighting sources. Securing solar panels to the cabin roof also will reduce the need for heating or cooling systems which again, curtails the use of polluting gadgets.

On the outside of the cabin, adding gardens or areas where lots of plants can be grown will not only increase oxygen levels, but may also be a source of organically grown fruit and vegetables, which are healthier than many shop bought items.

Our team members at Logspan can help you make sure you use the best materials for your log cabins, so give us a call today.

Famous and historic people with log cabins

  • 21 Jul 2023

With the rise in popularity of log cabins, more and more famous people and celebrities are purchasing these structures. Many well-known people use these buildings in out-of-the-way places to escape the limelight and to enjoy some peace and quiet, usually in the countryside; most have luxurious designs and interiors. Perhaps some of the most famous of these people include Oprah Winfrey and Bill Gates.

The iconic boxer Muhammad Ali, in his heyday, not only commissioned a log cabin for himself and his family, but also one for his parents close by. These became the perfect private retreats for the famous sportsman. Designers like Ralph Lauren have always taken inspiration for his archetypal clothing and homeware from traditional bespoke log cabins, which he loves. More luxurious log cabins and bbq huts have been owned by the likes of Tom Cruise, who originally intended for his cabin to be a retreat for his family away from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood life.

There have also been several British celebrities who have owned and lived in log cabins too. Queen Elizabeth II had her cabin built on her much-loved Balmoral Estate, while Paul McCartney has a cabin located in East Sussex. For the same reasons as others, these icons have the desire to own a property which is both beautiful and peaceful, and that helps them enjoy some quiet time.
